Desktop Metal Commences Shipments of Production System P-50 With Inaugural Customer Stanley Black & Decker

BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Desktop Metal (NYSE:DM) today announced it has shipped its first Production System™ P-50 printer to Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK), marking the commercialization of the company’s flagship additive manufacturing technology for mass production of end-use, metal parts.

As one of the most highly anticipated advanced manufacturing systems ever introduced, the P-50 is the product of nearly $100 million in investment and a four-year development program overseen by Desktop Metal engineers and materials scientists. The P-50 is designed to mass produce high-performance metal parts with the repeatability and cost required to compete with conventional manufacturing.

Stanley Black & Decker, the first P-50 customer, is a purpose-driven industrial organization that operates the world’s largest tools and storage business, including such iconic brands as DEWALT, BLACK+DECKER and CRAFTSMAN.

The Production System – World’s Fastest Way to 3D Print Metal Parts At-Scale

Created by the inventors of binder jetting and single-pass inkjet technology, the Production System is an industrial manufacturing platform powered by Desktop Metal’s Single Pass Jetting™ technology. It is designed to achieve speeds up to 100 times those of legacy powder bed fusion additive manufacturing technologies and enable production quantities of up to millions of parts per year at costs competitive with conventional mass production techniques. The platform supports a robust materials library including ten qualified metal alloys – from commercially pure copper to stainless steels such as 17-4PH – with additional metal alloys in active development.

In Fastener News:

The January seasonally adjusted Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was slightly softer m/m at 52.7, although modest underlying improvement was seen in most metrics; the seasonal adjustment factor downwardly impacted results as January is normally the strongest month of the year for the index.

Respondent commentary pointed to customer fatigue amid erratic supplier deliveries and lead times. The Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) was modestly softer as well, coming in at 62.8, due to higher inventory levels and a less-optimistic six-month outlook.

Net, we believe fastener market conditions were mostly stable with December with continued very strong demand partially weighed down by persistent supply chain challenges.

MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions (MFCS), a leading supplier of original equipment automotive components, announces the launch of the Threadstrong® brand and accompanying ecommerce website www.Threadstrong.us.

Brad Southwood, Vice President of Sales and Marketing said “We are well known as the leading OEM supplier in North America for high performance, decorative wheel fasteners. It’s always been frustrating to us to see the aftermarket flooded with inferior, low quality and potentially dangerous replacement wheel fasteners of unknown origin. So, we decided to do something about it.”

“No team is more knowledgeable about how to engineer and manufacture safe and durable wheel fasteners than the MacLean-Fogg team. They’ve been the leading supplier to many of the world’s largest automakers for over 40 years. They want the aftermarket consumers to know that when they buy a Threadstrong® wheel fastener, they can trust it was made in the U.S.A to all of the needed safety specifications.” Said Rob Whitney, President of the MFCS Fastener Division.

European Commission Imposes Anti-dumping Measures on Fasteners from China

Brussels, 17 February 2022

Today the European Commission published a regulation imposing anti-dumping duties on certain iron or steel fasteners imported from China. Duties have been set between 22.1% and 86.5%. The measures follow an investigation which showed the presence of significant dumping on the market, with Chinese imports heavily undercutting European sales prices and therefore injuring the European fasteners industry.

Fasteners are essential elements for a vast variety of industries, from simple screws in “do-it-yourself” kits to high-end applications in the car, aviation and electrical industries. The EU fasteners industry is worth €3.2 billion, with one tenth imported from China. EU producers of fasteners, who are mostly SMEs, employ more than 20,000 people across Europe in countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Sweden and Spain.

The anti-dumping measures imposed today will re-establish a level playing field by taking away the unfair competition caused by the price dumping, allowing EU producers of fasteners to compete in the EU market on an equal footing with the imported fasteners. This will ensure that there is continued and healthy production in the EU of fasteners of all ranges, including those used in high tech sectors like the automotive and car industries.

The anti-dumping measures imposed today will have a limited impact on EU users of fasteners. For the vast majority, fasteners represent only a minor part of the total cost of their final product. A shortage of fasteners is also not expected following the introduction of measures, since the EU industry has a large spare production capacity.

FASTENER DISTRIBUTOR INDEX (FDI) | January 2022

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for January, 2022.  The FDI dipped slightly again last month, coming in at 52.7 after closing out 2021 with a 56.2 reading, seasonally adjusted.

The Forward Looking Indicator (FLI) remained upbeat but followed suit, declining slightly to 62.8, the 20th consecutive month of positive outlook.

Key Takeaway:

The January seasonally adjusted Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was slightly softer m/m at 52.7, although modest underlying improvement was seen in most metrics; the seasonal adjustment factor downwardly impacted results as January is normally the strongest month of the year for the index.

Respondent commentary pointed to customer fatigue amid erratic supplier deliveries and lead times. About the Fastener Distributor Index (FDI).

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was developed as a service to the fastener industry by the FCH Sourcing Network in 2012 to be a new benchmark for the fastener industry.

The FDI is a monthly survey of North American fastener distributors, conducted with the FCH Sourcing Network and Baird with support from the National Fastener Distributors Association. It offers insights into current fastener industry trends/outlooks. Similarly, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) is based on a weighted average of four forward-looking inputs from the FDI survey. This indicator is designed to provide directional perspective on future expectations for fastener market conditions. As diffusion indexes, values above 50.0 signal strength, while readings below 50.0 signal weakness. Over time, results should be directly relevant to Fastenal (FAST) and broadly relevant to other industrial distributors such as W.W. Grainger (GWW) and MSC Industrial (MSM).

The FDI Survey website is a resource than can be accessed by anyone, but it can only be updated by registered users during the monthly open survey period, which occurs during the last week of each month.

2022 Manufacturing Industry Outlook

The manufacturing industry is building back fast, undeterred by significant labor and supply chain challenges. To maintain this momentum, manufacturers should navigate elevated risks while advancing sustainability priorities. Our 2022 outlook explores five manufacturing industry trends that can help organizations turn risks into advantages and capture growth.

Competing in the new market demands business agility

It’s unusual to see positive economic indicators paired with historic labor and supply chain challenges. But this is the trajectory for the US manufacturing industry in 2022 emerging from the pandemic. The recovery gained momentum in 2021 on the heels of vaccine rollout and rising demand. As industrial production and capacity utilization surpassed pre-pandemic levels midyear, strong increases in new orders for all major subsectors signal growth continuing in 2022.

However, optimism around revenue growth is held in check by caution from ongoing risks. Workforce shortages and supply chain instability are reducing operational efficiency and margins. Business agility can be critical for organizations seeking to operate through the turbulence from an unusually quick economic rebound—and to compete in the next growth period. As leaders look not only to defend against disruption but strengthen their offense, our 2022 manufacturing industry outlook examines five important trends to consider for manufacturing playbooks in the year ahead.

MacLean-Fogg Announces Launch of Threadstrong® Brand and Accompanying eCommerce Website

Threadstrong®

February 8, 2022 – Detroit, MI

MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions (MFCS), a leading supplier of original equipment automotive components, announces the launch of the Threadstrong® brand and accompanying ecommerce website www.Threadstrong.us.

“We are well known as the leading OEM supplier in North America for high performance, decorative wheel fasteners. It’s always been frustrating to us to see the aftermarket flooded with inferior, low quality and potentially dangerous replacement wheel fasteners of unknown origin. So, we decided to do something about it.” Said Brad Southwood, MFCS Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

“No team is more knowledgeable about how to engineer and manufacture safe and durable wheel fasteners than the MacLean-Fogg team. We’ve been the leading supplier to many of the world’s largest automakers for over 40 years. We want the aftermarket consumers to know that when they buy a Threadstrong® wheel fastener, they can trust it was made in the U.S.A to all of the needed safety specifications.” Said Rob Whitney, President of the MFCS Fastener Division.

“A lot goes into wheel fasteners that the general consumer probably doesn’t think about. Beyond just obvious considerations like material strength, corrosion resistance, and durability, there is a tremendous amount of engineering and quality control that goes into controlling the friction of the fastener’s load bearing surface against the wheel. Too much friction and the wheel fastener will torque down while still being loose against the wheel, creating a potentially unsafe condition. Too little friction and the act of torqueing the nut down can overstretch the stud creating a wheel stud failure. Can you trust that the replacement nuts you see online or in retail stores have the proper friction and coatings needed to assure a safe clamp? Our benchmark testing shows significant inconsistencies. What we do know is that Threadstrong® wheel fasteners will be safe to install and will work in the stated application.” Said Mark Raves, Director of Wheel Fastener Engineering for MFCS.

Threadstrong® wheel fasteners are available direct to consumers via www.Threadstrong.us e-commerce website and other select outlets.

Every Threadstrong® aftermarket wheel fastener is engineered and built in MFCS factories in Michigan and Illinois. The Threadstrong® brand is launching with a limited number of applications in both stainless steel and black appearance with new applications to be added soon. For more information, please visit www.Threadstrong.usor www.macleanfoggcs.com/Threadstrong. Media and other inquiries can reach us at mediarelations@macleanfogg.com.
