In 2021 the private and federal push for domestic supply of essential goods propelled reshoring and foreign direct investment (FDI) job announcements to a record high. Reshoring Initiative 1H 2022 data shows reshoring and FDI continuing these gains. The current 2022 projection of jobs announced is around 350,000 – another record, up from 260,000 in 2021. If the projection is achieved, 2022 will bring the total jobs announced since 2010 to over 1.6 million. Supply chain gaps and the need for greater self-sufficiency continue as major factors driving reshoring. The possibility of a Taiwan-China conflict and the threat of China decoupling are focusing those concerns. Destabilizing geopolitical and climate forces have brought to light our vulnerabilities and the need to address them. Subsequently, great opportunities have arisen for a continued meaningful rebound of U.S. manufacturing. Continuing the current trajectory will reduce the deficit, add jobs, and make the U.S. safer, more self-reliant and resilient.
There are many reasons for American manufacturers to reevaluate offshoring and consider reshoring. Companies are increasingly recognizing that costs, risks and strategic impacts previously ignored are large enough to overcome the shrinking emerging market wage advantages. They are seeing the benefits of proximity, i.e. producing in the market, especially when the home market is the U.S., still the world’s largest.
The top reasons that companies reshore include:
Lead time
Higher product quality and consistency
Rising offshore wages
Skilled workforce
Local tax incentives
Image of being Made in USA
Lower inventory levels, better turns
Better responsiveness to changing customer demands
Minimal intellectual property and regulatory compliance risks
Improved innovation and product differentiation
Why Reshoring Makes Sense for America
Reshoring is the fastest and most efficient way to strengthen the U.S. economy because it:
Helps balance the trade and budget deficits
Reduces unemployment by creating productive jobs
Reduces income inequality
Motivates skilled workforce recruitment by demonstrating that manufacturing is a growth career.
Helps maintain the broad industrial capability required for national defense
About Reshoring Initiative
Reshoring is gaining momentum throughout the country. Many companies have already repatriated some of their manufacturing efforts, and the Reshoring Initiative is continuing to spread the “return-manufacturing-home” message to help other manufacturers realize America is an advantageous place to produce goods.
The United States used to be the world’s industrial powerhouse, and Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative and former president of machine tool maker GF AgieCharmilles, grew up experiencing its glory.
Moser’s father, a manager, and grandfather, a foreman, worked for the once sprawling Singer sewing machine factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Moser himself spent summer vacations from high school and college working at the plant.
But times changed. The Singer factory is now gone as are a long list of other American manufacturing plants due to decades of offshoring. Not wanting to see any more U.S. manufacturing jobs disappear, Moser found it critical to start an industry-led initiative to prove offshoring is not always the best economical decision for companies.
In fact, American companies considering sending their manufacturing offshore often don’t consider all of the costs, e.g. inventory carrying costs, travel costs to check on suppliers, intellectual property risks and opportunity costs from product pipelines being too long.
The Reshoring Initiative, founded in early 2010, takes action by helping manufacturers realize that local production, in some cases, reduces their total cost of ownership of purchased parts and tooling. The Initiative also trains suppliers how to effectively meet the needs of their local customers, giving the suppliers the tools to sell against lower priced offshore competitors.

New Research on the State of Leadership in Distribution: Distributors Must Rethink How They Lead in a Post-Pandemic World
Aug. 29, 2022 – The very nature of leadership has changed as a result of the pandemic and other disruptive forces. As a result, the human element will play an important role in leadership in a post-pandemic world.
Distributors across product segments, generations and geographies agreed with these two core premises in the new report, “Reimagining Leadership,” the first in a landmark triannual series of reports called “The Future of Distribution” from Dirk Beveridge, Founder of UnleashWD, Executive Producer at We Supply America, President of the Beveridge Consulting Group and Champion for the noble calling of distribution for over 36 years.
The work highlighted in the first report was inspired by Founder Dirk Beveridge’s travel across the country during two seasons of the We Supply America tour, when he visited dozens of distributors and saw firsthand the challenges that leadership is facing.
“Distributors are experiencing a collision of forces changing how we live, work and play. We’re also experiencing a great generational shift, which several distributors told us doesn’t get enough credit for the impact it is having. This confluence of change has accelerated over the past couple of years, leading to what we call The Great Redefinition,” Beveridge said.
This has forced distributors to rethink how they lead to ensure their relevance long into the future.
Core findings include:
78% of the survey respondents agreed that the very nature of leadership is changing.
83% believe we must lead differently coming out of the pandemic than how we led going in.
Despite recognizing the need for change, however, more than half of survey respondents said distributors are still leading in an antiquated way through Managing and Controlling, and just 6% believe businesses are currently embracing the Noble Calling of leadership. At this level, management is called by a higher purpose and is intent on making an oversized impact on and beyond the bottom line.
There is a 41 percentage-point difference between where leaders are now (Managing and Controlling), and where distributors said they need to be in the next five years (Noble Calling) if they want to succeed.
93% believe that the human element will play an important role in leadership in a post-pandemic world.
“Distributors are at an inflection point. If they want to survive, they must chart a new course,” Beveridge said. “They need to embrace some qualities and let go of others that led to their success in the past. The ability to move quickly and embrace creative solutions must be a core competency. They must innovate the leadership role.”
UnleashWD is a design, innovation, and strategy firm that transforms legacy distributors into nimble and innovative market leaders. Dirk Beveridge is the founder of UnleashWD, Executive Producer at We Supply America, President of the Beveridge Consulting Group, and Champion for the noble calling of distribution for over 36 years. His one-of-a-kind perspective on the future of wholesale distribution has guided his mission to advance the growth, relevance, and transformation of the industry, helping distributors thrive. Despite ongoing supply chain challenges and an unstable economic situation, the company was able to carry its growth momentum from 2021 and is on track to report the largest annual sales volume in its 26-year history.
“Even against the economic and market challenges we faced in the first half of 2022, we continue to see double-digit sales growth through our divisional structure,” shared Dan Hill, chief executive officer of Würth Industry North America. “Our divisions are wholly focused on their vertical market and offer unparalleled product range, services, and expertise to their respective industries. The continued growth of Würth Industry North America relied on the execution of an alignment that highlights the strengths and capabilities of the historical companies.”
The company’s divisional structure has contributed to its continued sales success. The MRO, Safety, & Metalworking division saw a 22.7% increase over the prior year, and the Industrial Division, including domestic and international business from Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, grew 14.8%. The company’s alignment into divisions was completed in 2021. The multi-year business transformation was designed to streamline and optimize the operations, product range, and purchasing power of the group of North American companies and grow total sales that contribute to the overall success of its parent company, the Würth Group. Since then, all four divisions have shown total year-over-year sales growth.
The company continues to focus on investing in people, facilities, and inventory to maintain a high service degree with existing customers and expand its ability to onboard new customers. WINA welcomed 128 new employees in the seven months of 2022. Currently, 2,534 people work for the company, which has grown its workforce by 5.3% since the close of 2021. WINA is part of the $21 billion Würth Group, which, since 1995, has held an A/stable Standard & Poor’s rating. The Group’s financial stability and available capital support it in navigating through the recent economic, supply chain, and inflationary distress while maintaining its focus on investment in its people, companies, and customers. The company is carefully monitoring the market situation and appropriately adjusting inventory levels in close partnership with its supplier base to protect its customers as the economic situation continues to be volatile.
