Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) | October 2023

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for October, 2023.  The FDI rebounded last month to 52.6 after its disappointing 48.5 in September, seasonally adjusted.

The Forward Looking Indicator (FLI) also climbed, although it remains in contractionary territory at  47.1.

Key Takeaway:

The seasonally adjusted Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) improved m/m and returned to an above-50 reading at 52.6. Improving attitudes about the economy and more stable trends within respondents’ businesses were noted this month. Importantly, this marked the first reading above 50 since February (August was 50.0). The Forward Looking Indicator (FLI) improved m/m and continues to climb closer to a neutral 50 reading rising to 47.

Key Points:

FDI improves m/m, back to expansionary levels. The seasonally adjusted October FDI (52.6) improved from last month (48.5) and returned to growth (>50) for the first time since February. Looking at the overall components of the FDI, three of the four (sales, employment, and supplier delivers) improved m/m, while customer inventories were unchanged. The sales index saw the biggest m/m improvement (non-seasonally adjusted index improved from just 37.1 last month to 54.7 in October). Respondents reported a bit of a lift from the economy this month: “The economy seems to be causing an increased demand for products within our niche market.” 44% of respondents indicated sales were above seasonal expectations compared to just 16% last month. Another 22% said sales were in line (42% last month), while 34% saw weaker sales than expected (September 42%). FLI inching closer to neutral 50 level. The FLI also saw improvement, coming in at 47.1 vs. 44.8 last month. With the index still below 50, some additional softening could be expected in the near term, but bigger picture, the FLI continues to climb back up towards 50, which we see as encouraging. A softer employment reading and lower respondent inventory levels more than offset a modestly weaker six-month outlook, driving the m/m improvement in the FLI. On the outlook specifically, 25% of respondents predicted higher activity levels six months from now vs. today compared to 29% last month. The percentage anticipating similar activity was 47% compared to 45% in September, while the percentage expecting softer activity was modestly higher at 28% from 26%. After the seasonal adjustment factor, the six-month outlook came in at 47.1 vs. 44.8 last month.

About the Fastener Distributor Index (FDI).

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was developed as a service to the fastener industry by the FCH Sourcing Network in 2012 to be a new benchmark for the fastener industry. The FDI is a monthly survey of North American fastener distributors, conducted with the FCH Sourcing Network and Baird. It offers insights into current fastener industry trends/outlooks. Similarly, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) is based on a weighted average of four forward-looking inputs from the FDI survey. This indicator is designed to provide directional perspective on future expectations for fastener market conditions. As diffusion indexes, values above 50.0 signal strength, while readings below 50.0 signal weakness. Over time, results should be directly relevant to Fastenal (FAST) and broadly relevant to other industrial distributors such as W.W. Grainger (GWW) and MSC Industrial (MSM).

The FDI Survey website is a resource than can be accessed by anyone, but it can only be updated by registered users during the monthly open survey period, which occurs during the last week of each month.

Manufacturing PMI® at 46.7%; October 2023 Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business®

NEWS PROVIDED BY: Institute for Supply Management

01 Nov, 2023

New Orders and Backlogs Contracting; Employment Contracting; Production Expanding; Supplier Deliveries Faster; Raw Materials Inventories Contracting; Customers’ Inventories Too Low; Prices Decreasing; Exports and Imports Contracting

,  /PRNewswire/ — Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in October for the 12th consecutive month following a 28-month period of growth, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business®.

The report was issued today by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee:

“The Manufacturing PMI® registered 46.7 percent in October, 2.3 percentage points lower than the 49 percent recorded in September. The overall economy dropped back into contraction after one month of weak expansion preceded by nine months of contraction and a 30-month period of expansion before that. (A Manufacturing PMI® above 48.7 percent, over a period of time, generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy.) The New Orders Index remained in contraction territory at 45.5 percent, 3.7 percentage points lower than the figure of 49.2 percent recorded in September. The Production Index reading of 50.4 percent is a 2.1-percentage point decrease compared to September’s figure of 52.5 percent. The Prices Index registered 45.1 percent, up 1.3 percentage points compared to the reading of 43.8 percent in September. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 42.2 percent, 0.2 percentage point lower than the September reading of 42.4 percent. The Employment Index registered 46.8 percent, down 4.4 percentage points from the 51.2 percent reported in September.

“The Supplier Deliveries Index figure of 47.7 percent is 1.3 percentage points higher than the 46.4 percent recorded in September. (Supplier Deliveries is the only ISM® Report On Business® index that is inversed; a reading of above 50 percent indicates slower deliveries, which is typical as the economy improves and customer demand increases.)

“The Inventories Index decreased by 2.5 percentage points to 43.3 percent; the September reading was 45.8 percent. The New Export Orders Index reading of 49.4 percent is 2 percentage points higher than September’s figure of 47.4 percent. The Imports Index remained in contraction territory, registering 47.9 percent, 0.3 percentage point lower than the 48.2 percent reported in September.”

Fiore continues, “The U.S. manufacturing sector continued to contract and at a faster rate in October, dropping 2.3 percentage points to 46.7 percent, compared to September’s reading of 49 percent. Companies are still managing outputs appropriately as order softness continues. Demand eased, with the (1) New Orders Index contracting at a faster rate, (2) New Export Orders Index continuing in contraction territory but with a modest increase, and (3) Backlog of Orders Index declining slightly and remaining in strong contraction territory. The Customers’ Inventories Index reading reached ‘about right’ territory, not accommodative for future production. Output/Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) was negative, with a combined 6.5-percentage point downward impact on the Manufacturing PMI® calculation. Panelists’ companies had stable month-over-month production and took more immediate actions to reduce head counts, using layoffs as the primary tool. Inputs — defined as supplier deliveries, inventories, prices and imports — continued to accommodate future demand growth. The Supplier Deliveries Index indicated faster deliveries for the 13th straight month, at a slower rate compared to September, and the Inventories Index dropped further into contraction territory. The Prices Index remained in ‘decreasing’ territory, signifying continuing overall price reductions in spite of October’s energy market turbulence. Manufacturing supplier lead times continue to decrease, but at a slower pace.

“Of the six biggest manufacturing industries, only one — Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products — registered growth in October.

“Demand remains soft, but production execution is stable compared to September as panelists’ companies continue to manage outputs, material inputs and — more aggressively — labor costs. Suppliers continue to have capacity. Seventy-five percent of manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP) contracted in October, up from 71 percent in September. More importantly, the share of sector GDP registering a composite PMI® calculation at or below 45 percent — a good barometer of overall manufacturing weakness — was 37 percent in October, compared to 6 percent in September and 15 percent in August. Three of the top seven industries by contribution to manufacturing GDP fell into this category,” says Fiore.

The two manufacturing industries that reported growth in October are: Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; and Plastics & Rubber Products. The 13 industries reporting contraction in October — in the following order — are: Printing & Related Support Activities; Textile Mills; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Machinery; Fabricated Metal Products; Wood Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Furniture & Related Products; Paper Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Primary Metals; Chemical Products; and Transportation Equipment.

WHAT RESPONDENTS ARE SAYING

  • “Markets remain tough, and we have focused more resources on sales and marketing to drive greater sales and new market penetration with our devices. Lots of leadership focus on what we can do in the near term that will also support long-term company goals.” [Computer & Electronic Products]
  • “Economy absolutely slowing down. Less optimism regarding the first quarter of 2024.” [Chemical Products]
  • “Backlog is starting to dip a bit. We’re hearing of cutbacks in 2024 ordering, but it’s still very strong compared to historical averages.” [Transportation Equipment]
  • “Markets appear to have slightly slowed. Certain commodities remain high.” [Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products]
  • “Seeing a slowdown on bookings, and our backlog is down to five days from 15 weeks earlier this year.” [Machinery]
  • “A slow fourth quarter, and we’re clearly in a mild industry recession. However, demand is down less than 5 percent, and customer confidence of a recovery in the second half of 2024 is solid. Supplier deliveries are stable, and suppliers are seeking more work. But they’re not yet willing to adjust prices to compete for it.” [Fabricated Metal Products]
  • “Business is decent — not great, but steady and solid. We are meeting our sales and margin goals, but it’s definitely hard to guess the future.” [Furniture & Related Products]
  • “Commercial constructions continue to remain ahead of 2022. We have some concern over 2024 regarding inflation, as well as gas and oil pricing potentially slowing down building.” [Nonmetallic Mineral Products]
  • “Demand for raw materials/chemicals appears to be stable heading into the fourth quarter.” [Petroleum & Coal Products]
  • “Orders continue to increase in some sectors. Construction industry-related products/orders are slowing down.” [Plastics & Rubber Products]
  • “Despite the ongoing United Auto Workers (UAW) strike, there’s a firmness and pickup in orders for the rest of the fourth quarter.” [Primary Metals]

FND Interview: Kala Milburg, Marine Fasteners

Kala Milburg | Sales Support | Marine Fasteners Inc.

Meet Kala Milburg, Sales Support at Marine Fasteners, and the recipient of the 2023 Women in the Fastener Industry (WIFI) Edith Cameron Scholarship. The scholarship is offered to WIFI Members requesting financial assistance to attend the International Fastener Expo in Las Vegas. Travel, accommodations and entrance to the show are provided to the recipient. The recipient has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the largest B2B expo for fasteners in No. America by participating in the many WIFI event and the WIFI show booth. FND had the chance to meet Kala at IFE 2023 and it was clear from her warmth and enthusiasm she was fully immersed in the IFE experience. She expressed how grateful she was to have been given this opportunity.

Meet Kala Milburg, the 2023 WIFI | IFE Edith Cameron Scholarship!

Tell Us About Yourself

My name is Kala Milburg, and I’ve been a part of Marine Fasteners for a year and a half as a Sales Support Specialist. After spending over ten years in the Medical field I made the switch over to the world of fasteners. At that time, my dad had been in the Fastener Industry for three years and knew it would be an excellent fit. It was very intimidating starting and knowing next to nothing about fasteners. The switch out of the Medical field and into fasteners had to be the most challenging but rewarding changes of my life.

What are your career goals?

There are two career goals I’m currently working towards. The first I would like to accomplish is becoming a certified Fastener Specialist to better assist our customers. My next goal would be to transition into a Sales Specialist role and expand my skill set. I’m interested in Sales because I have great interpersonal skills and am passionate about providing excellent customer service.

What activities are you involved in when you’re not working?

When I’m not working enjoy hiking, traveling, gardening, attending racing events, and doing arts & crafts with my kids. Also, I enjoy planning all the Indiana branch company events.

Who is your role model?

My role model would have to be my dad. He was a colossal influence in my decision to join the Fastener Industry and has the best work ethic I’ve ever seen. Always does what needs to be done. And has an ability to read the room and adapt to the given moment.

How does winning this scholarship impact your career in the fastener industry?

Winning the WIFI Edith Cameron Scholarship made a difference in my career by allowing me to get my name introduced to a plethora of people in the Fastener industry than I’d ever could have imagined. It was also a very eye-opening experience for me. It allowed me to see what all an Expo entails. From booth set-up and tear down to everything in between. It was a very important moment in the next step in my career. With Expos being a good portion of this business, it was extremely helpful to be able to experience that. I always see the representatives I assist going to them but was never sure what it encompassed.

How will you support others coming into the industry?

I plan to support others coming into the industry by sharing my knowledge and the information I found helpful. As well as the things I think would have been helpful for me just starting out. Such as fastener fundamentals, how to decipher our part numbers, and tricks with our computer system. Also, staying active and involved in the WIFI.

What did you learn/like most about IFE2023?

What I liked most about IFE2023 was how kind, helpful, and friendly everyone was. Even while being competitors, I witnessed some great friendships deeper than just work. Some new and many years long. So many people willing to help people outside of their company and expecting nothing in return was very uplifting. The Fastener Industry didn’t feel like a business it felt like a family, one that I’m proud to be a part of. I learned that shows are used for Increasing brand awareness, networking, and creating new business relationships. It is also a great place to see multiple current customers at one time.

The prestigious Best Booth Awards, presented by Fastener News Desk, once again highlighted outstanding exhibitors at this year’s International Fastener Expo (IFE). Celebrating its 9th year, the awards continue to recognize outstanding booth designs that captivate, inspire, and engross thousands of show attendees.

Since its inception in 2014, the Best Booth Awards have served as a testament to the creativity, branding, and design prowess of exhibitors. The IFE show floor is a canvas for companies to paint a vivid picture of their brand, and this year was no exception.

During IFE 2023, the team at Fastener News Desk was on the ground, engaging with exhibitors, understanding the intricacies of their booth designs, and absorbing the vibrant customer experiences that each had to offer. An exhibitor’s booth is not just a physical space – it is a key touchpoint for companies to introduce their teams, showcase their innovations, and fortify customer relationships.

Visually, the booth was a masterclass in design and layout. Clean, crisp, and spacious, it exuded an inviting ambiance, beckoning attendees from afar. Its balanced aesthetic, accentuated by clear signage, made it unmistakable that Rivet King was a specialist in their field.

But what truly set their booth apart was its meticulous product display. Organized and neatly showcased, speaking volumes about the company’s commitment to quality. The expo buzzed with excitement as several rescue groups graced the venue with their lovable dogs, making Crossroad’s booth a magnet for attendees. And yes, I had the delightful chance to interact and even belly scratch some of these furry ambassadors! BEST GIVEAWAY – BTM Manufacturing

Tapping into the universal allure of coffee, BTM Manufacturing emerged as the star of IFE2023 giveaways. Recognizing everyone’s need for that caffeine kick, BTM generously offered their signature U-Bolt Blend Coffee and Spice Rub as delightful take-home treats. But they didn’t stop there.

In a masterstroke of branding and attendee pampering, BTM teamed up with IFE2023 to set up a full-fledged coffee bar smack in the center of the expo floor. This became an oasis for the early risers and those seeking a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. And, while I’m typically not one to reach for coffee, even I couldn’t resist a cup!

Every detail was tailored to amplify the BTM brand: from the branded napkins and cups to the k-cups and aromatic bags of freshly roasted coffee attendees could take home. This giveaway wasn’t just about the items – it was a sensory experience that ensured BTM remained top-of-mind during and well after the expo.

BEST GROUP AWARD – Women in the Fastener Industry (WIFI)

At IFE2023, the spirit and dynamism of WIFI members were unmistakable. From orchestrating the animated Welcome Reception cabana to serving refreshments on the show floor, the women of WIFI took center stage. Their aptly chosen ‘SHEROES’ theme underscored the pivotal role and unwavering commitment of women in the fastener domain. I even joined the fun, channeling my inner fastener Wonder Woman for a snapshot!

Adorned in eye-catching pink capes and sporting their signature ‘Galvanized’ tee shirts, the WIFI team effortlessly became the expo’s epicenter, attracting and enrolling numerous new members. A clear message resonated throughout the expo: the WIFI women are here, and they are revolutionizing the fastener landscape. Watch out fastener world, WIFI women are on the move!
