fastener-distributor-index-(fdi)-|-december-2023

Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) | December 2023

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for December, 2023 retrenches below 50, climbing to 53.4 after two consecutive months of expansionary readings that left us incrementally positive on fastener market momentum, the FDI took a somewhat unexpected step back in December to 47.5.

Key Points:

FDI retrenches below 50. After two consecutive months of expansionary readings that left us incrementally positive on fastener market momentum, the FDI took a somewhat unexpected step back in December to 47.5 (from 53.4 last month). However, this could simply be normal seasonal slowing in December, as many participants suggested: “December is ALWAYS our worst month so the negative answers for month-to-month shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Our customers are mostly closed the last two weeks of the year and many of our vendors are closed the last week of the year. ” M/m deceleration in the FDI was driven by a significantly lower seasonally adjusted sales index (47.4 vs. 63.0 in November), the employment index (moderated to 50.0 from 55.9), and customer inventories (46.6 from 54.4). Just 24% of respondents indicated sales came in above seasonal expectations (November 35% and October 44%). Another 38% said sales were in line (consistent with last month), while 38% saw weaker sales than expected (November 26%).

FLI also slightly lower m/m. The FLI saw similar deceleration, coming in at 49.6 vs. 50.4 last month. Last month’s reading had marked the first growth reading for the index since July 2022. The m/m decline in December reflected softer employment levels and higher customer inventories, although the six-month outlook index did move higher off a soft month. On the outlook specifically, 55% of respondents predicted higher activity six months from now vs. today compared to 47% last month. The percentage anticipating similar activity was 31% compared to 29% in November, while the percentage expecting softer activity was just 14% (last month 24%). This drove the six-month outlook index to register 70.7 vs. 61.8 last month.

About the Fastener Distributor Index (FDI).

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was developed as a service to the fastener industry by the FCH Sourcing Network in 2012 to be a new benchmark for the fastener industry. The FDI is a monthly survey of North American fastener distributors, conducted with the FCH Sourcing Network and Baird. It offers insights into current fastener industry trends/outlooks. Similarly, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) is based on a weighted average of four forward-looking inputs from the FDI survey. This indicator is designed to provide directional perspective on future expectations for fastener market conditions. As diffusion indexes, values above 50.0 signal strength, while readings below 50.0 signal weakness. Over time, results should be directly relevant to Fastenal (FAST) and broadly relevant to other industrial distributors such as W.W. Grainger (GWW) and MSC Industrial (MSM).

The FDI Survey website is a resource than can be accessed by anyone, but it can only be updated by registered users during the monthly open survey period, which occurs during the last week of each month.

fastener-distributor-index-(fdi)-|-november-2023

Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) | November 2023

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for November, 2023 continued its rebound last month, climbing to 53.4 after reading 52.6 in October, seasonally adjusted. Following suit, the Forward Looking Indicator (FLI) finally inched above the 50 mark for the first time this year, rising to 50.4.

Key Takeaway:

The seasonally adjusted Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) improved m/m and remained above a neutral 50 reading for the second consecutive month, reading 53.4. Comments skewed noticeably more positive this month with many expressing that they are seeing good bookings momentum and feeling growing optimism. The Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) also improved m/m and finally reached above 50 for the first time since July 2022, reading 50.4. Overall, we view the November FDI/FLI as perhaps indicative of a true stabilization and recovery in fastener markets for the first time in quite a while.

Key Points:

FDI above 50 for two consecutive months. The seasonally adjusted November FDI (53.4) improved from last month (52.6) and marked the second consecutive month of growth (>50). While the FDI has registered a handful of growth readings throughout 2023, the last time the index posted two consecutive >50 readings was June 2022 – perhaps suggesting a real change in underlying demand trends rather than another head fake or anomaly. M/m growth was driven by an improved seasonally adjusted sales index (63.0 vs. 52.6 last month), the employment index (improved to 55.9 from 51.6), and customer inventories (54.4 from 51.6 in October). Respondents indicated they saw growth in bookings and strong daily sales numbers: “I was very surprised this month as daily sales numbers added up more quickly than usual. Nice result.” 35% of respondents indicated sales came in above seasonal expectations (October 44%). Another 38% said sales were in line (22% last month), while just 26% saw weaker sales than

expected (October 34% and 2023 YTD average 39%).

FLI breaks through to growth. The FLI also saw sequential improvement, coming in at 50.4 vs. 47.1 last month. The FLI had gradually climbed towards 50 from a low of 37.8 in April, but this month marked the first growth reading for the index since July 2022. Higher employment levels and a significantly more positive six-month outlook drove the improvement. On the outlook specifically, 47% of respondents predicted higher activity six months from now vs. today compared to just 25% last month. The percentage anticipating similar activity was 29% compared to 47% in October, while the percentage expecting softer activity was 24% (last month 28%). This drove the six-month outlook index to register 61.8 vs. 48.4 last month.

Patriot Bolt Sets World Record for the Largest Hex Nut

Patriot Bolt And Fastener: USA Specialty Bolt & Nut Company

Patriot Bolt Unveils Record-Breaking Achievement: The World’s Largest Hex Nut in Houston, TX

FND INTERVIEW with Bryce Oliveira Patriot Bolt, VP of Sales

FND: Tell us about Patriot Bolt.

Bryce Oliveira: Patriot Bolt is an industry-leading manufacturer of US-made specialty fasteners, bolts, and hardware for bolted connections. We supply businesses with the products and services they need when they need them.

FND: How big is the world’s largest hex nut?

Bryce Oliveira: 16’ across the flats, 19’ across the corners, 9’ thick

FND: How much does the world’s largest hex nut weigh?

Bryce Oliveira: Approximately 4400lbs

FND: What material is “Big Tex The Incredible Hex” Nut made from?

Bryce Oliveira: The nut is made from carbon steel tubing for the internal support, carbon steel sheet for the shell and threads

FND: How was a nut of this magnitude manufactured?

Bryce Oliveira: Formed and welded, we will publish some cool time lapse videos of the manufacturing process soon! One of the impressive features is the helical threads, the threads are actually functional (if you can find a bolt big enough)

FND: Where was the world’s largest hex nut manufactured?

Bryce Oliveira: JK Welding In Cypress, TX right outside of Houston

FND: Where is the permanent home for the world’s largest hex nut?

Bryce Oliveira: Patriot Bolt Humble, TX right outside of Houston

FND: Why did Patriot Bolt decide to undertake this project?

Bryce Oliveira: We have always admired the nut Packer Fastener built several years ago.  During Covid, a company in Slovenia took the world record from Packer.  We always joked that the worlds largest hex nut cannot reside in Slovenia! Well that joke kept growing legs and we finally made the decision to build the largest hex nut right here in Houston.  We reached out to JK, designed the nut, and got to work. You know what they say, everything is bigger in Texas.

FND: Will the “Big Tex The Incredible Hex” Nut set a Guinness World Record?

Bryce Oliveira: Yes, the nut will set the world record by a long shot!
