Eric Dudas & Brian Musker, FCH Sourcing Network / Fully Threaded Radio

Long time collaborators, Eric Dudas and Brian Musker came to the fastener industry during a speculative project of their web application development business, and co-  founded FastenersClearingHouse.com, later re-branded the FCH Sourcing Network, in 2006. They launched the industry renowned Fully Threaded Radio podcast in 2010 to promote their growing digital platform. Along the way, they created the FCH Scrubber, an AI-like software tool to manage fastener data, and soon after began providing data cleansing and formatting services to fastener distributors.

They also launched the widely circulated Fastener Distributor Index in 2011 to measure and publish current market conditions and sentiment. Beginning with their home association, the MWFA, the duo has consistently supported and participated in events and meetings across the industry. Developing a unique blend of services for a fastener world emerging into the digital era, Brian and Eric have forged connections with an untold number of fastener professionals and facilitated many more for those who have benefited from their contributions.

Don’t miss your opportunity to be a part of this prestigious celebration. Mark your calendars for the International Fastener      Expo, set to take place from October 9th to 11th, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Join the IFE and fastener industry as we honor tradition, celebrate innovation, and look forward to an even brighter future for the global fastener industry.

The highlight of the annual International Fastener Expo is the awards ceremony where inductees are celebrated for their outstanding contributions. The IFE will showcase the induction of luminaries into the Fastener Hall of Fame with a special ceremony on October 10th (at the Exhibit Hall Sessions State from 3 to 4 pm), a testament to the industry’s commitment to recognizing excellence. The event will also feature the prestigious Young Fastener Professional of the Year Awards, celebrating emerging talent and dedication to advancement. One of the unique attractions at the ceremony is the replica display wall adorned with Fastener Hall of Fame bricks, offering attendees a chance to capture the moment against a backdrop that symbolizes excellence and innovation.

The History of the Fastener Hall of Fame

The rich history of the Fastener Hall of Fame traces its roots back to the year 1981. Mike McGuire and Jim Bannister, co-founders and co-producers of the National Industrial Fastener Show, unveiled the inaugural Fastener Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 1982. Drawing upon their deep industry insights and connections, Mike and Jim collaborated with industry associates to handpick distinguished individuals for this esteemed recognition. This endeavor marked the inception of a tradition that would spotlight outstanding contributors to the fastener industry for decades to come.

The Fastener Hall of Fame, once a humble initiative, has evolved into an enduring testament to the remarkable individuals who have shaped the industrial fastener sector. With each passing year, the torch is passed to new inductees who carry forward the tradition of excellence and innovation.

This living history serves as a reminder that innovation, dedication, and collaboration are the cornerstones of the fastener industry’s success.

why-you-really-need-a-“data-plan”

Why you really need a “data plan”

THE BLUE PRINT

A quick internet search tells me that Mark Twain once said:

“Data is like garbage. You’d better know what you are going to do with it before you collect it.”

This shows us two things. First, you can’t trust everything you see on the internet. And second, you really should have a plan regarding data.

*Editor’s Note: We reached out to a Mark Twain scholar who confirmed this is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be a Twain quote.

Data matters in supply chains more than ever.

Why is data important to supply chains?

Short answer: Accurate and timely data lets companies make informed decisions.

This is because data can offer insight. Organizations can then use it to optimize operations and improve efficiency. An example: distribution operations and logistics. Everything from route planning to vehicle usage can be improved and optimized based on data.

We commonly see this in our lives via package tracking. In real-time – no matter where it may be in the world – we can see where a shipment is and even the mode of transportation it’s on.

Data is also critical in forecasting and demand planning.

It allows supply chain experts to better understand current and future demand for products and services. By understanding purchasing patterns and stocking locations, teams can more efficiently manage the supply chain for both external (customers) and internal (production) needs.

Plus, data can be used to mitigate risk within a supply chain. It can track current inventory levels and optimize them to reduce waste while improving efficiencies.

In other words, data can help you avoid unplanned expenses and costly delays.

How ‘good’ data adds value.

Let’s first define what good data means. We work with our customers and business partners to make sure we properly understand, define, and catalog data. This is done so that when the data is used, there is lineage, definition, and governance tied to it.

This really means data integrity. This data needs to be what everyone believes it is in order to contribute to what I would say is ‘good’ or trusted data.

So, good data should improve the decision-making process because you can see what has been measured or captured. It provides a lens into what is happening and allows you to evaluate measurables for improvement.

In the end, data should be seen as a competitive advantage. Whether it comes from understanding where time is spent or how products and services are being used, data should help increase efficiencies. It should provide the ability to respond more quickly and realize opportunities sooner.

How data helps supply chains

• Improve visibility Collecting data helps companies identify – and adapt to – bottlenecks, delays, and disruptions.

• Optimize planning: Analyzing demand trends and production capacity can help meet customer demand.

• Expand collaboration: Sharing data with suppliers and logistics providers can help them identify and address inefficiencies.

• Boost efficiency: When data identifies inefficiencies, you can streamline operations and even reduce costs.

Fort Worth Approves $18M in Incentives for New E-Commerce Regional HQ and Distribution Center

McMaster-Carr announces regional headquarters, distribution center in Fort Worth

Fort Worth Approves $18M in Incentives for New E-Commerce Regional HQ and Distribution Center

Quite literally a “nuts and bolts” company, the 1901-founded McMaster-Carr sells over 700,000 tools, hardware, and industrial items to plants across the U.S. It plans to invest at least $360 million in a newly constructed regional HQ in North Fort Worth, creating 250 new jobs.

These are just some of the 700,000-plus items sold by McMaster-Carr on its e-commerce site. [Image: McMaster-Carr]

The Fort Worth City Council unanimously approved an $18 million incentive package today for the construction and operation of a new e-commerce regional headquarters and distribution center in North Fort Worth.

Illinois-based McMaster-Carr Supply Co., an e-commerce industrial distribution company, is slated to invest at least $360 million in the new facility on 117 acres on Litsey Road—with that figure evenly split between $180 million in real property improvements and $180 in taxable business personal property.

A nuts-and-bolts company selling over 700,000 products

If you think the e-commerce image at the top of this story looks like something from 1901, you’re onto something—McMaster-Carr was founded that same year, 122 years ago.

Quite literally a nuts-and-bolts company, McMaster-Carr is a private American supplier of hardware, tools, raw materials, industrial materials, and maintenance equipment—selling over 700,000 products to plants across the U.S.

But with a very modern logistical flourish, the company says 98% of products ordered “ship from stock and deliver same or next day.”

New Fort Worth regional HQ to create 250 jobs

McMaster-Carr’s new regional headquarters is expected to create 250 jobs with an average salary of $85,000, while creating nearly $57 million in new incremental property and sales tax revenue, part of which will go to the $18 million in grants, according to the Dallas Business Journal, which cited city documents.

The incentives will come via 10 annual grants equaling up to 85% of the maintenance and operations portion of new incremental city ad valorem taxes on business personal property. Also included are up to 50% of the new incremental city 1% sales tax revenues.

McMaster-Carr must complete the project on time in order to obtain the grants.

The Fort Worth regional HQ will be the sixth for McMaster-Carr across the U.S. Its other regional headquarters and offices are as far-flung as Los Angeles, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Chicago.

Lessons from transformers: How some distributors reset and won

In an exceptionally challenging marketplace, a few distributors are outperforming others by wide margins. Here’s what they do differently.

Disruption is accelerating in distribution.

For years, distributors have faced the threats of disintermediation, ever-rising customer expectations, and pressure from e-commerce and omnichannel competitors. Then came a global pandemic and unprecedented supply chain challenges, labor shortages, and geopolitical tensions, as well as sharply higher interest rates and the specter of recession.

The industry as a whole has always been resilient, but these and other challenges have truly tested its resolve. Some distributors have faltered in the face of declining revenues and narrowing margins; others have weathered the storms and held their ground. A few—roughly one in ten—have thrived, improving their ROIC by almost 30 percent and increasing their revenues by an average of almost 9 percent CAGR, their profits by around five percentage points, and their EBITDA margins by nearly seven percentage points in the past few years (Exhibit 1).

What do these outperformers have in common? Our research shows that the winning distributors don’t just outperform—they transform. They use strategic M&A to build economies of scale, acquire talent, and gain access to new customers and markets. They maintain a relentless focus on the customer, increase their profits holistically, improve and expand their product assortments, and offer more value-added services and a better digital experience.

In this article, we not only review the distribution industry’s long-standing and new challenges but also explain how some companies beat the odds.

The business is tough, and getting tougher

In 2019, McKinsey published a report on the coming shakeout in distribution, outlining the industry-disrupting trends, such as OEM disintermediation, rising customer expectations, and powerful new entrants. That shakeout is still under way. Since then, our experience and updated research have helped us identify a combination of old and new threats to growth and profitability across the distribution industry.

FND Conversation with Jake Hall, IFE 2023 Keynote Speaker

Mark your calendars for October 9 – 11th as the International Fastener Expo takes over the vibrant city of Las Vegas!

FND sat down for a conversation with Jake Hall, keynote speaker for the 2023 International Fastener Expo.

Keynote speaker, Jake Hall AKA the Manufacturing Millennial will take to the stage at IFE 2023 to dive into the topics of technology, innovation, and how to get your current and future workforce excited about these advances to the industry.

Plan to arrive at the the exhibit hall early on Tuesday, October 10, the 2023, before the official opening of the Exhibit Hall.

⏰8:30AM – 9:30AM

Keynote Presentation: The Future of Manufacturing, Technology and Workforce

FND: Jake, please introduce yourself to our audience.

JH: Thanks so much I’m really looking forward to being the speaker in a couple of months. I’ve been in the manufacturing industry for 17 years, my background is working for a manufacturer back when I was in high school, and I’ve worked through systems integrators, distributors, and manufacturers during that time. What I do now is, I’m a full-time keynote speaker that travels around the US. I go to manufacturing facilities and look at the technology, talk with leadership teams. So, over that time I’ve become a influencer in the manufacturing space so my goal is to highlight what new technology is going to be impacting manufacturers such as automation, and then how do we do a better job of leveraging and changing our culture being more accepting to the next generation of millennials and Gen. Z’s who we need to bring up and fill the workforce that we have.

WATCH NOW: On FastenerTV at YouTube:

FND: When was the idea for the Manufacturing Millennial conceived? What really sparked you to think that there was this strong need for advocacy?

JH:  The idea for the Manufacturing Millennial started in 2019, I was attending a trade show conference and one of the speakers at the time was talking about future proofing your company as a manufacturer. I was looking across the leadership teams and everyone that was sitting there, I thought for wanting to future proof I’m the only millennial that’s like under the age of 40 that’s in the audience right now, and so that’s kind of where the idea of being a unapologetic millennial in the manufacturing space idea started.

The Manufacturing Millennial content started in 2020 when the pandemic kicked off and we were all told to work from home. I saw when I was in outside sales at the time when I couldn’t go see people anymore. I still wanted to reach an audience. I thought I’ll start doing it by means other than just e-mail and phone calls. I started creating content on LinkedIn which I viewed as the biggest network of professionals in the manufacturing, automation, robotics for skills trade at the time. I started creating content with videos, short form articles, and posting memes related to our industry. My connections of like 200 people at a time grew to thousands within months. Then I said Well that’s interesting, there is something unique here. Our industry wants to see people who are passionate about it, where we’re always talking about the positive things that are happening. Talking about solutions that are making a difference, and are not just the ones that are complaining, complaining, complaining about how dark, dirty, dull, and dangerous our industry is. No, our industry is changing, and we must advocate for that, and that’s kind of how the whole brand started three years ago and now I have 100 million views across my social platforms around content in the manufacturing and automation space and it’s a lot of fun!

FND: Congratulations Jake, that that’s a huge audience to be reaching and for the authentic voice that you bring to manufacturing, automation, and technology. Your voice is really needed out there today. One of the problems that fastener distributors and manufacturers face is that they are generational businesses. In many cases the older generations want to change, but just don’t know where to get started. Since the pandemic, businesses have begun to recognize the need to include the generations that are coming up and allow them help steer us forward. They know how to buy online, they’re comfortable doing almost everything online, they are the future of our industry. Time to give them a voice, time to change up the game and go from brick and mortar to something even more industrious and digitized that will last through the coming years.

JH: Actually, that’s what we’ll cover in the keynote. We’ll talk about the emerging technologies, but we also talk about how manufacturers begin to change the way they have been doing business within their floor in their front office and through like through social media through the digital world that millennials and Gen. Z’s live and communicate in. How do we begin to change to drive the future generation to work for us in industry? I can’t wait to see everyone in Las Vegas!

FND: What do you see as the most promising technologies that are available to manufacturers today and industrial distributors that they should stay informed about and why?

JH: There are many forms of technology that are out there, everything from full level automation to what we’re seeing now, like the industry 4.0 space around solutions designed to improve and make the lives of workers easier and make the tasks easier. What a lot of manufacturers are fighting right now is not about trying to completely remove the worker from a task for an operation, it’s how do we make that workers life easier, so they stick around and do it longer, they won’t have that turnover rate. Things like AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) are always beneficial collaborative robotic systems are great. If you have a worker that’s running back and forth from machine to machine or from your shipping and inventory to a production area, you’re spending half a day just walking, well maybe it’s time to integrate an AMR (Autonomous mobile robots), AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles) into your floor.

We’ll also talk about like technologies on the digital side. What is generative AI, what is ChatGPT doing to make your life easier? If you’re out there and you’re writing memos all day, or you have to write a new case study, or need to write instructions on how to run the machine, maybe start focusing on how we can use generative AI to do that from a from a work side. But also, generative AI can be one of those things that alleviates the front office as well, from HR or a sales or marketing perspective it can create marketing campaigns for you. It can go through resumes or job descriptions and look for key topics that match what you’re looking for. It can be designed that if your job descriptions maybe aren’t inclusive, to let’s say invite women to be a part of your job offer because your job description says is he needs to be able to run this machine, he needs to have years of experience. All of a sudden a female reads that and says oh jeez the immediately just think it’s going to be a male I might as well not even apply for it you’re like that advice you’re limiting the you know the resources and the market that you could have come and work for you so those are all different types of technology that are out there that can you know do small things to make the workers on the floor in the front office their jobs a little bit easier.

It goes on beyond that as well when we look at you know there’s a lot there’s so many great stories that I’m going to bring to this keynote but you know some of the examples is changing up the work week where you know for so long been picking up this like five hour work week that existed and when you look at what millennials and Gen. Z’s now have a flexible work between Amazon flex, working for a Grubhub or drive app company. They have that flexibility. We as manufacturers need to say listen the standard 5-day work week might not be the best option for us anymore. I know dozens of manufacturers that have switched to 4-day work weeks. I know a couple that are even doing 3-day work weeks right now. Of course, it’s got to match your production and your work style but it’s those things that you need to explore such as what if you did a working parent job, where they must drop their kids off at school and they must pick them up as well. They might not be able to do a traditional 40-hour work week. What are you doing to create a 30-hour work week, nine to three each day, where you can still then have those resources available. You change your production design layout to match and you’re going to attract 20 to 30 or more people on your floor that you might not even know existed.

FND: Jake, what advice would you give to a young person that might be considering a career path in manufacturing? Excite a young person about why it’s not you know that dirty greasy job anymore.

JH: The one thing I would start with is there’s so many directions you can take to get to a career in manufacturing. You can go and work for a skilled trades program, you can go and work for a manufacturer to get trained there. You can get a two-year associate degree; you can get a four-year degree. and engineering school there’s so many different paths that lead to a successful career in manufacturing. So, that’s where I would start. The one thing about manufacturing is there’s so many career path opportunities to advance as you grow within the company. So, that’s number one. The second one is I would say manufacturing has really shifted over the last ten years. We’re adopting more technology, more innovation, more future and robotics where yeah there are going to be the dark and the dirty aspects of jobs, but what we’re doing is we’re taking technology to alleviate those jobs to make them simpler. So, that’s the biggest approach that I’d have.

The other big thing is if you’re a person and you don’t know what you want to do when you grow up, and you’re a junior senior in high school, don’t go get a four-year degree and graduate with $35,000 in student debt when you don’t know what you want to do. Go and work for a company, go and get paid to work for a manufacturer. Get paid for your job, but also get paid to go to school. Get an apprenticeship, become a journeyman. There are so many amazing opportunities and avenues to a career in manufacturing. That’s why there are over 11,000,000 people working in manufacturing in the United States. People think that manufacturing left, it didn’t leave it all. If you look at the size of manufacturing here in the United States, it’s like a $2.4 trillion industry. If you were to take that industry and make its own country it would be the 7th largest economical country in the world!

FND: Jake I noticed you’ve got that Cubs hat on; you’ve always got that Cubs hat on! Tell us about your favorite sports team and if you think they’re going to clinch the division? What’s your take?

JH: I am a diehard Cubs fan! Obviously, I wear my Cubs hat wherever we go! it’s going to be tough, the Brewers have a really easy second season second-half schedule I’m hoping right now I think we’re half a game let’s see, we’re recording this on August 16th so I think we’re now one game out behind the wild card and like 3 1/2 games or games behind the Brewers right now in the social Division I have we have we’re able to start winning some games on our easier schedule for the next 12 to 14 games I think we got a chance to make the playoffs so we’ll see how things go and but it’s been a really fun last month to watch after the trailer round from the MLB All Star break so I think we I think we got a chance right now.

FND: Go Cubs! We are looking forward to seeing you on the expo floor at the International Fastener Expo! Any last word you want to put in?

JH: I’m just looking forward to seeing people there, networking and learning about all the new technology that’s happening in the fastener industry.

Minnesota Nice: Daniel Florness

Frugality is often used as a pejorative in the business world. Fastenal CEO Daniel Florness wears it as a badge of honor, pointing to his plain office and explaining that too many people confuse frugal with cheap.

AMPHe also considers frugality key for Fastenal, which puts an emphasis on getting closer to customers and prioritizes its spending accordingly.

“Frugal is the further we get from our customer, the less willing we are to spend money. Because we really have to understand how that dollar spent helps our customer,” Florness tells The CEO Magazine. “Our motto as an organization for the last 50-some years has been ‘growth through customer service’.”

AMP

Our motto as an organization for the last 50-some years has been ‘growth through customer service’.

Fastenal’s famed frugality hasn’t slowed the company’s growth since its founding in 1967. It also hasn’t impeded its expansion since Florness became CEO in 2015, with sales doubling and its international presence mushrooming despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnesota-based Fastenal is a United States leader in the wholesale distribution of industrial and construction supplies. Traded on the Nasdaq exchange, the company has evolved from a small-town shop selling fasteners to operating around the world.

Founder Bob Kierlin started the business with US$30,000 cobbled together from his savings and four friends. He originally envisioned custom vending machines dispensing nuts and bolts but encountered technological limitations.

Adjusting operations

Today, Fastenal operates around 1,500 branch locations. That’s 40 percent fewer than a decade ago, according to Florness, who has turned the focus toward opening on-site locations. Such operations allow Fastenal experts to work on-site with customers – rather than another location off-site – quickly replenishing inventories as needed and optimizing supply chains.

“It really has transformed our business over the last seven-to-10 years and put us in a position to find deeper success in the marketplace,” Florness says.

Fastenal has rolled out the vending machines envisaged by its founder back in the 60s. Its FASTVend solutions help organizations with inventory management, improve access to merchandise and reduce unnecessary consumption.

AMP

When we solve problems it isn’t this group of people at some faraway corporate office that’s solving problems.

Its international business broke the US$1 billion barrier in revenue last year. And the company has pushed ahead with digitalization. Some 50 percent of its business is now digital, a figure Florness expects to continue growing rapidly.

“It’s really about how you engage and communicate with your customer and finding ways to pull more of their needs through our network rather than push it through,” he says. “Because it’s a much leaner concept and it allows us to be operationally more efficient.

“You can offer better prices in the marketplace to your customers. You can also reward your employees more in the process and grow the business faster. And our shareholders win when those three things happen.”

Company culture

The Fastenal culture of corporate frugality started with its founder. Inc. Magazine named Kierlin the cheapest CEO in America, noting that he owned six suits, which he purchased used from a men’s store manager.

“Frugality is an attitude you develop. Once you have it, it sticks with you in everything in life. You don’t have to think about it,” Kierlin told the magazine.

“Kierlin had a genuine distaste for taking on debt, so we learned to be very frugal from day one,” Florness says.

Florness started with Fastenal in 1996 as CFO after 10 years as a public accountant with KPMG.

He was tapped as CEO in 2015 – reflecting the preference in Fastenal for promoting from within as well as the company’s commitment to developing leaders through an in-house corporate university.

“It’s all about, develop yourself, develop others and then create that direction. Next, align the resources and people and provide commitment to that end. That’s what a leader does,” Florness says.

“If I look at leaders throughout the organization, our senior leadership, the average of the group is 20-plus years’ experience in the organization.”

AMP

We’re challenging each other to provide the greatest supply chain to that end customer.

Florness explains that it’s a hallmark of the organization that there is nothing too sacred to talk about and work through. “There’s genuine trust through the organization that I think carries us through in that type of period,” he says.

Fastenal has also fomented a culture of decentralization.

“It empowers people to make decisions, and that means you can make mistakes. That’s an expected part of learning,” he says. “When we solve problems, it isn’t this group of people at some faraway corporate office that’s doing it. We’re solving problems at the point of engagement with our customer.”

AMP

Securing Supply Chains

The COVID-19 pandemic offered a rude reminder of the importance of securing supply chains, a concept Florness is promoting among his customers and suppliers.

“When chaos is going on, where do you have to spend your energy and where can you not afford to spend your energy?” Florness asks.

“What we try to do is bring together that group of products that our customer doesn’t have to worry about when things are chaotic, so they can focus their energy in other places.

“That’s the concept of securing.”

Fastenal courts close relationships with suppliers – just as it does with customers such as Fluke Corporation, which is renowned for its test, diagnostic and measurement tools.

“We’re open and honest,” Florness says. “I would expect a supplier to challenge us to help them find success, just as we would challenge them to help us find success.

“Both of us, in that challenging conversation, should ultimately be looking at the customer that’s ending up with that product, that widget. And we’re challenging each other to provide the greatest supply chain to that end customer.”

“Fastenal’s slogan, ‘Where Industry Meets Innovation’, aptly reflects their partnership with Fluke. Fluke’s 75-year legacy of innovation, portability, ruggedness, safety, accuracy and rigid standards of quality aligns perfectly with Fastenal’s commitment to excellence.” – Jason White, National Accounts Manager, Fluke
