IN THE NEWS with Fastener News Desk the Week of October 10th, 2022

Here’s what’s happening in and around the fastener industry the Week of October 3rd, 2022

Listen now: (8:10)

In Fastener News…

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for September 2022 retreated once again to a sub-50 reading at 47.6 as the FDI continues its recent choppy pattern of bouncing up/below the neutral level. This was consistent with the sharp contraction registered in last month’s Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI), which further suggested it could result in a contractionary reading for September. Demand commentary remained bearish, with many expecting further normalizing demand as customers burn through inventory. Looking forward, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) remained at sub-50 levels, reading 47.5, suggesting additional declines in the FDI could be likely next month. Overall, September was a relatively soft month for fastener distributors, and the FDI suspects further softening ahead.

In Manufacturing News…

The nation celebrated Manufacturing Day last Friday. The MFG Day movement saw an increase in both in-person and virtual events as the nation get back to business after the pandemic. The pandemic increased the rate at which attrition is taking place in both manufacturing and distribution, as well as colleges seeing a decrease in enrollment numbers, making trade schools a natural fit for the new workforce. The President signed A Manufacturing Day Proclamation and remarked that America is the only Nation in the world that can be defined in a single word:  possibilities.  American manufacturing makes those possibilities real.  Today, on National Manufacturing Day, thousands of manufacturers across the country are opening their doors to give a new generation of students, teachers, and builders a glimpse of the opportunities that a career in modern manufacturing offers.

Optimas Solutions Elevates Mike Tuffy and Daniel Harms to Dual-CEOs

Image

Former Presidents of Optimas International and Americas Given More Autonomy, Responsibility by Parent Company American Industrial Partners to Continue Successful Transformation of the Business

Wood Dale, IL. – October 12, 2022 — Optimas Solutions, a global industrial manufacturer/distributor and service provider, announced today the elevation of Mike Tuffy to CEO, International, and Daniel Harms to CEO, Americas. The decision to implement a dual-CEO structure evolves the organizational model established in 2020 with autonomous, yet connected, business units.

By design, this structure has brought Optimas closer to customers and suppliers and created greater community within the organization. It also better reflects the scope of Harms and Tuffy’s roles and the contributions they’ve been making to Optimas for over a year.

“This promotion is recognition for how much Optimas, under the leadership of Mike and Daniel, has accomplished over the past year,” said AIP Partner Tim Horgan. “Their leadership, partnership, and results have exceeded expectations.”

Success of Dual CEOs

According to the Harvard Business Review, of the 2,200 companies listed in the S&P 1200 and the Russell 1000 stock indexes, from 1996 to 2020, fewer than 100 were led by two chief executives simultaneously. During periods of dual leadership, nearly 60 percent of these companies generated an average annual shareholder return of 9.5 percent. This is significantly higher than the average of 6.9 percent for each company’s relevant investment index. Dual-leader tenure also lasted about as long as a single CEO at the helm—around five years on average.

Foundational Momentum

While both regions have their own goals and objectives, Optimas continues to activate learnings and efficiencies gained over the past 2.5 years to better align new and existing services to customer and supply partner needs. Some of these innovations include establishing and adopting:

  • Business Intelligence Teams to activate the power of its ERP, demand planning and inventory management applications to deliver tech-enabled automation and supply chain assurance.
  • Re-imagined Supply Chain Organizations with a category-based structure to streamline communication and order execution, enhance supplier relationships and shape fulfillment for future business expansion.
  • Global Project Management Office to codify and digitize process innovation that elevates operational efficiencies and increases supply chain assurance.
  • Manufacturing Capabilities to expand capacity, improve output and reduce lead time for customers.
  • Investments in New and Existing Talent to strengthen Optimas and help constituencies elevate their productivity and profits.
  • Advancements in Social Responsibility Initiatives to further sustainability and company culture efforts.

“The past year has been a great journey for Optimas,” said Harms and Tuffy. “We both share a deep belief in this dual-CEO structure—and the positive momentum Optimas has gained in the last year is real. Feedback from customers, prospects and teammates around the globe is positive and tells us we’re on the right track.”

Backgrounds

Tuffy has over 35 years of experience in the fastener industry with leadership positions across commercial, sourcing and operations. As the leader of international markets, he utilizes his broad knowledge of world-class supplier capabilities to match with customer needs and expectations that drive efficiencies for partners and Optimas. Previously, Mike served in leadership positions at Walters Hexagon and Anixter where he was part of the management team that significantly grew the business through organic growth and acquisitions. He was also part of the acquisition team that carved Optimas out of Anixter.

A strategic thought leader with nearly 20 years of supply chain experience, Harms has built and guided high-performing teams to deliver operational excellence across multiple industries. His influential leadership style and data-driven, problem-solving approach have consistently produced top- and bottom-line growth with company P&Ls over $100 million. Prior to joining Optimas, Harms held several positions of increasing responsibility at DSC/CJ Logistics, culminating as Senior Vice President, Operations. Harms earned a Master’s of Business Administration from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University and a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee. Harms is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

FASTENER DISTRIBUTOR INDEX (FDI) | SEPTEMBER 2022

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) survey for September, 2022.  The FDI returned to contractionary territory last month with a 47.6 reading, seasonally adjusted, after rising to 52.6 the previous month.

The Forward Looking Indicator (FLI) remained virtually unchanged at 47.5, reflecting general uneasiness with expected market conditions.

Key Takeaway:

The September seasonally adjusted Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) retreated once again to a sub-50 reading at 47.6 as the FDI continues its recent choppy pattern of bouncing up/below the neutral level. This was consistent with the sharp contraction registered in last month’s Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI), which we suggested could result in a contractionary reading for September. Demand commentary remained bearish, with many expecting further normalizing demand as customers burn through inventory. Looking forward, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) remained at sub-50 levels, reading 47.5,suggesting additional declines in the FDI could be likely next month. Overall, September was a relatively soft month for fastener distributors and we suspect further softening ahead.

READ FULL REPORT:

FDI_Report_September_2022

FND encourages all North American fastener distributors to take part in the FDI. If you are interested in being a more active part of the fastener industry, you can apply to add your company to the FDI survey group. Complete the “Request an Invitation to Participate” form by clicking here. Once verified, you will receive login ID and password information and you will be notified by email every month when the survey period has been opened. – Fastener News Desk

About the Fastener Distributor Index (FDI).

The Fastener Distributor Index (FDI) was developed as a service to the fastener industry by the FCH Sourcing Network in 2012 to be a new benchmark for the fastener industry.

The FDI is a monthly survey of North American fastener distributors, conducted with the FCH Sourcing Network and Baird with support from the National Fastener Distributors Association. It offers insights into current fastener industry trends/outlooks. Similarly, the Forward-Looking Indicator (FLI) is based on a weighted average of four forward-looking inputs from the FDI survey. This indicator is designed to provide directional perspective on future expectations for fastener market conditions. As diffusion indexes, values above 50.0 signal strength, while readings below 50.0 signal weakness. Over time, results should be directly relevant to Fastenal (FAST) and broadly relevant to other industrial distributors such as W.W. Grainger (GWW) and MSC Industrial (MSM).

The FDI Survey website is a resource than can be accessed by anyone, but it can only be updated by registered users during the monthly open survey period, which occurs during the last week of each month.

A Proclamation on National Manufacturing Day, 2022

Manufacturing is the backbone of America, powering our economy and building our middle class.  Over the past year and a half, we have been making “Buy American” a reality, not just a slogan, and bringing jobs and companies home.  This year’s National Manufacturing Day comes in the midst of an American manufacturing boom, as we celebrate the strength and resilience of the American worker and recommit to the investments and innovation that will ensure the future is Made in America.

Throughout the pandemic, even as factories closed and supply chains stalled, American workers showed incredible ingenuity and resolve to keep our country moving forward.  Today, we are experiencing the strongest manufacturing rebound at this point in a presidency in 3 decades, adding 668,000 manufacturing jobs since my Administration began.  Employers have announced $200 billion in new manufacturing investments here since 2021, and manufacturing construction has more than doubled as companies are betting on America again.  But to really guarantee our economic strength and national security, we have to do more by investing in infrastructure, innovation, and our own supply chains to bring prices down and good-paying union jobs home.

That is why last fall, I signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a once-in-a-generation investment in America’s roads, bridges, railways, and ports, which will boost demand for American iron, steel, and construction materials.  It is why we are helping to train the workforce of the future — supporting STEM education and tech hubs across the country, pushing companies to partner with community colleges and technical schools, and bolstering Registered Apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeship programs funded by the American Rescue Plan.  It is why we are using the Government’s purchasing power to grow the market for American-made goods.  One of the first things I did as President was tighten Federal “Buy American” provisions, raising the amount of required domestic content from 55 percent to 75 percent.  When the Federal Government spends taxpayer dollars, it should spend them on American-made products.

Meanwhile, we are investing in tomorrow’s biggest industries — clean energy; advanced biotechnology; quantum computing; and semiconductors, the computer chips that power everything from smartphones to dishwashers and cars.  In August, I signed the CHIPS and Science Act, securing significant funding for domestic manufacturing and research and development.  America invented the semiconductor; this law brings it back home — and it is already drawing tens of billions of dollars in private-sector investment and will create tens of thousands of jobs.  I also recently signed the game-changing Inflation Reduction Act, which allocates a record $369 billion to fight climate change, boosting demand for energy-efficient appliances, homes, and cars and creating millions of good-paying clean-energy and clean-manufacturing jobs.

America is the only Nation in the world that can be defined in a single word:  possibilities.  American manufacturing makes those possibilities real.  Today, on National Manufacturing Day, thousands of manufacturers across the country are opening their doors to give a new generation of students, teachers, and builders a glimpse of the opportunities that a career in modern manufacturing offers.  We stand with them and commit to winning not just the jobs of today but the jobs and industries of tomorrow. The United States is in a position to outcompete the world once again.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 7, 2022, as National Manufacturing Day.  I encourage all Americans to look for ways to get involved in your community and join me in participating in National Manufacturing Day, and, most importantly, buy American.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this

sixth day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh.

Thank you for your generosity, which will allow me in-person integration back into the fastener industry and fastener family in my new role as a Distribution Sales Representative for OEP. Attending IFE 2022 will afford me many opportunities to network, connect and begin new customer relationships as well as reconnect with all the existing relationships that I am fortunate to already know. The Olander Company, Inc. Achieves ISO-Certification

The Olander Company, Inc Reviews - Fasteners, Hardware | Sunnyvale CA | VendOp

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Olander Company, Inc. is now ISO-Certified

The wholesaler’s Quality Management System has met the standards for official accreditation

October 3, 2022

Sunnyvale, CA – Fastener distributor The Olander Company, Inc. has confirmed last month that they are now certified by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, as meeting the high standards for quality outlined in their ISO 9001:2015 edition.

When serving industries like medical technology, semiconductor manufacturing, and automotive and aerospace engineering, a meticulous quality management system is key. Olander’s internal processes focus on continuous improvement and thorough documentation. “Our policy is that Olander meets or exceeds our customer’s requirements with quality products at competitive prices, through our Quality Management System (QMS) and continuous improvement process,” says Richard Thiedt, Operations and Quality Manager at Olander, who oversaw the auditing and certification process. “We’re glad to finally be certified,” he continued. “It has always been a priority for us at Olander to be excellent corporate partner to our customers, and they’ll now have the additional assurance of our ISO certification. We stand by our products and services, and constantly work to improve.”

ISO quality standards evolve and are updated periodically; Olander’s certification indicates that the company will update its systems in accordance with the standard when necessary. For now, they continue to forge ahead with their already-successful 2022 business year: “ISO 9001:2015 Certification is not us trying to ‘check a box’ because it is the latest initiative or corporate fad,” remarks David Byrne, CEO. “Olander is embracing the spirit of ISO and continuous improvement because we believe it will make us a better company, and improve the quality of the products and services we offer our customers, in the long run. We are excited about our future. And I am so grateful for the dedication of our Quality Team and all of our employees, who did the hard work to earn this certification.”

The Sunnyvale-based company celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2022.
