TR Fastenings Celebrates 50 Years at Fastener Fair Global

The TR Fastenings team was delighted to be back exhibiting at Fastener Fair Global, after four years since the previous event. This is a special year for TR, a Trifast plc Group Company, as it is its 50th Anniversary and the whole team was pleased to be able to celebrate this at the exhibition.

Its stand carried a 50th golden theme to acknowledge this major milestone and the design and layout received compliments from all the visitors. TR paid extra focus on comfort and it was designed to have comfortable seating areas which facilitated more in-depth discussions face to face with customers in comfort, and on numerous occasions we were so busy that every seat was filled. The two large TV screens showcased how fasteners are made from wire through to completed product explaining the different processes, including heat treatment and finishings. These videos have been produced in house for training purposes for both staff and customers and include animations illustrating where TR products are used. These created a lot of interest and are available in the media library on the TR website.

This show was very important to the whole TR team, who were keen to meet up with its 35 Master Distributors located throughout mainland Europe and thank them for their support in distributing its proprietary products including Hank Self-Clinch parts, Plastic and Rubber commodities and Fasteners for Plastic. There was interest shown too in TR’s recently expanded manufacturing site TR VIC in Italy

Managing Brexit to ensure that there were no supply issues, necessitated opening a central warehouse hub in Verl, Germany. This is close to the TR Kuhlmann site, and TR Kuhlmann Managing Director, Peter Henning oversaw this successful project. He enhanced his Sales Team to manage the increased business and they continue to work with TR’s distributor team in the UK who have long term relationships with many of these Master Distributors.

To thank them for their support, and the growth that TR is seeing, it hosted a 50th dinner celebration for 50 people during one of the evenings. TR Board members attended and Adam John, European Distribution Sales Manager hosted the event.

It was amazing to be able to meet so many of our Distributors in one place and to thank them personally. Some of the conversations over dinner really cemented future opportunities. ” – Adam John – European Distribution Sales Manager

Traditionally, this exhibition has been a distributor show and the team was very pleased to see high profile OEM’s attending, in particular from the automotive sector. TR had been extensively advertising the fact that it was attending and that certainly boosted the visits to the stand. It scanned more than 350 visitors who spent time with our teams, and it has already secured sizeable new business wins and forged new relationships.

Pictured: The staff managing the stand, key members of our Distributor Sales Team from the UK including Nathan Parmar and Harry Forster, and Lena Fornefeld and Pierre Reimering from TR in Germany. Additionally, product specialists Andrew Fletcher, Director of Plastics & Rubber, Sven Brehler, Director of Engineering and Andrew Nuttall, UK & Europe MD.

Scott Mac Meekin, Interim CEO of Trifast and Dan Jack, Chief Operating Officer supported the team on the stand, and they had a number of high-profile meetings during the days with both vendors and customers. It proved to be an exceptionally great place to network which has not been possible during the last few years.

John Dick, Group Supply Chain Director, and his team had booked a conference room on the mezzanine, where they held 24 supplier meetings during the show proving to be a very productive and effective use of their time.

This venue enabled us to have personal meetings with key vendors which proved to be very beneficial. This cut down what would have been many weeks of travel and cost to meet so many people. We will certainly be utilising this facility again. As ever the exhibition was very well organised, and we are booking space for 2025. The exhibition staff were very supportive and visited us several times a day to ensure that we had everything that we needed. Glenda Roberts, Trifast Global Projects and Marketing Director; said “We had a very productive exhibition, and we were delighted with the quality of the footfall. It was good to be back and well worth the investment in time and money! ” – John Dick, Group Supply Chain Director

NASA’s New 3D-Printed Superalloy Can Take the Heat

NASA has demonstrated a breakthrough in 3D printable high-temperature materials that could lead to stronger, more durable parts for airplanes and spacecraft.

A team of innovators from NASA and The Ohio State University detailed the characteristics of the new alloy, GRX-810, in a peer-reviewed paper (SEE BELOW) published in the journal Nature.Ohio State Buckeyes | Ohio State University Athletics

“This superalloy has the potential to dramatically improve the strength and toughness of components and parts used in aviation and space exploration,” said Dr. Tim Smith of NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, lead author of the Nature paper. Smith and his Glenn colleague Christopher Kantzos invented GRX-810.

Smith and his team employed time-saving computer modeling, as well as a laser 3D printing process that fused metals together, layer-by-layer, to create the new alloy. They used this process to produce the NASA logo pictured above.

GRX-810 is an oxide dispersion strengthened alloy. In other words, tiny particles containing oxygen atoms spread throughout the alloy enhance its strength. Such alloys are excellent candidates to build aerospace parts for high-temperature applications, like those inside aircraft and rocket engines, because they can withstand harsher conditions before reaching their breaking points.

Current state-of-the-art 3D printed superalloys can withstand temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Compared to those, GRX-810 is twice as strong, over 1,000 times more durable, and twice as resistant to oxidation.

“This new alloy is a major achievement,” said Dale Hopkins, deputy project manager of NASA’s Transformational Tools and Technologies project. “In the very near future, it may well be one of the most successful technology patents NASA Glenn has ever produced.”

A team of contributors from Glenn, NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and The Ohio State University co-authored the Nature paper.

GRX-810 was developed under NASA’s Transformational Tools and Technologies project, with support from the agency’s Game Changing Development Program.

Beyond the Scoreboard: The Impact of Fastener Industry Sponsorship in Professional Sports

Fastener News Desk Launches New Website

From the revving of the engines, the drop of the puck, the starting gate buzzer, and the green flag on the race track, to the nuts and bolts of stadium facility maintenance, the fastener industry has made a big play for partnerships and sponsoring of professional sports teams and players.

Fastener News Desk’s editor-in chief was watching the US Ski Team in an alpine downhill event and was absolutely astonished to see the Würth Group brand name on the downhill course as well as the bibs that the professional ski teams from around the world wore over their ski suits.

It got us wondering how pro sports provides an opportunity for industrial suppliers to engage with potential customers and partners in a unique and exciting environment.  We thought this would be a fastenating story, and after some research we concluded that this play for customer experience and brand recognition is worth $10’s of millions of dollars! We found sports sponsorships offer fastener distributors and manufacturers the opportunity to connect with B2B buyers in a unique way. By sponsoring professional sports teams or events, these companies can tap into the emotional connections that people have with their favorite teams, players, and sports. This emotional connection can translate into increased brand loyalty and positive customer experiences.

In today’s competitive B2B landscape, customer experience has become a key differentiator for industrial suppliers looking to build loyal customer bases. By investing in pro-sports partnerships and sponsorships, suppliers have found an effective way to connect with B2B buyers who are passionate about their favorite teams and players. Whether it’s sponsoring a local school team or a professional sports franchise, these partnerships allow suppliers to tap into the emotional connections that buyers have with their teams and create positive associations with their brands. By offering memorable experiences and leveraging the excitement of sports, suppliers can increase engagement and build long-lasting customer relationships that drive business growth.

Industrial companies are becoming heavily invested in pro-sporting events for a variety of reasons, increasing brand exposure and having the opportunity to connect with potential customers in a unique and engaging way. These events attract a large and diverse audience, which can include key decision makers and influencers in the industries that these industrial suppliers serve.

Many of these companies identify with the value in the association with the speed and precision of motorsports and how it relates to their own products and services. By sponsoring these events, companies can also demonstrate their support for and involvement in the communities they serve, which can enhance their reputation and build goodwill among customers and stakeholders.

For example, if a customer sees a fastener company’s logo prominently displayed on the jersey of their favorite NASCAR driver, they may feel a positive association with that company and be more likely to do business with them in the future. This emotional connection can extend beyond just the product or service being sold and can help create a lasting relationship between the fastener distribution business and the customer.

Additionally, sponsoring sports teams and events can create opportunities for customer engagement and experiential marketing. Companies can host events and promotions around sporting events, such as meet-and-greets with athletes or fan experiences, which can further deepen the emotional connection with customers and future workforce.

Ultimately, the goal of sports sponsorships is to create a positive customer experience that fosters loyalty and leads to increased sales. By connecting with customers in their happy place, such as watching sports, fastener companies have the potential to create lasting relationships with their customers and drive business growth.

These industrial suppliers view major league sports and NASCAR as an opportunity to showcase their brands to a large and diverse audience, including fans of motorsports, construction, and manufacturing industries to name a few.

There are several industrial fastener players that are all in when in comes to pro sports sponsorships! One of  the most noteworthy on a global scale is definitely Würth Group.

I would like to share the success of this small family business called ETANCO ESPAÑA which will soon be 40 years old –Lara García Martínez

ETANCO ESPAÑA was created in 1984 by its CEO – Carlos Garcia with a clear market objective: to meet the deadlines required by installers of roofs and façades on construction sites. Carlos Garcia saw a clear lack of supply in this sector that caused projects to be delayed and therefore entailed extra expenses in the project. Carlos Garcia created ETANCO with the idea of supplying in the short-medium term fasteners with washers and painted fasteners. This would avoid the extra costs that used to be a headache for installers. The company not only focused on the Spanish market but also expanded into Portugal, Latin America, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco.

ETANCO was thus able to develop over the years and improve its distribution. But times and needs change and Carlos Garcia along with his brother Luis Garcia, General Manager, believed that they should not be closed in the distribution. There were installers who were not trained or needed support as the engineering companies were increasingly present in the projects, more certificates, documentation, windload calculations, etc. were required. The next step was the creation of a new job position: Technical Manager. It was a guaranteed success. This position was more than accepted and valued in the market. Carlos and Luis quickly saw its potential, thus ensuring better relations between the different membrane manufacturers, engineering and architectural firms. This new person and his team provide trainings, on-site support and provide the necessary documentation required for clients.

But like every company, we have to keep looking for new innovations in the sector and try to be the first in the market to present them. Many visits to fairs in Germany, contacts need to be able to reach the most innovative fastening system for roofs and façades: the induction system. A system that fixes the waterproofing membrane to a metal plate through the heat created by induction. This avoids perforation of the membranes and thus prevents dampness or other consequences caused by weather conditions.

Merchant Logo

As in any market new things take time but with patience and tenacity ETANCO succeeded in being the first country in Europe to use this system. Many projects completed since 2015 and more to come. Lara Garcia, daughter of Carlos Garcia will make sure of it. Lara is responsible for purchasing and marketing. Her relationships with suppliers and entrepreneurship in the networks has made the name of ETANCO SPAIN better known in the national and foreign market. She, now in management, will be the continuity of the family business.

But Carlos and Luis know well that success is not only about selling but also about making progress in their internal structure. Coincidentally, before the pandemic they decided to establish for all their employees the option of teleworking which would only be done in cases of need on the part of the employee. That this was put in place before COVID-19 was key. In the confinement, together with the telework option and the warehouse operators who were allowed to work they were able to continue their activity on a regular basis at the end of the pandemic year with a good result.

Today they are ahead in the market for the Induction System (mentioned above), the Power Grip fastening system for solar panels (video above) so fashionable now and have opened their business to a new product line: Fall Protection. They have been able to present all their new products in the fair where they usually attend: CONSTRUTEC in Madrid.

This success year after year would not have been possible if it were not for the most important thing: people. Their employees, their distributors, their customers. The care of these relationships on a day-to-day basis makes it possible for us to be and remain among the first in the market.

As they say, ETANCO still has a long way to go.
